A TASTE OF HOME (2021)

A personal short film about Brie, a homesick young adult, who moves out to live on her own for the first time, and makes her first meal on her own.

A Taste of Home is my thesis film, done over the span of 8 months, from concept to finished product! It's loosely based off of my first time moving out to attend college, the thoughts that went through my head and the first meal I made for myself on my own. This took a lot out of me to do, and I tried my best, experimenting with a hand-drawn lineless style. Enjoy!

PROCESS AND ASSETS

The concept of A Taste of Home sprouted from some vague memories of my first year of college at Sheridan, having just moved into residence. The events and story of the film are a pretty dramatic recreation of what I was thinking at the time. I don't tend to get homesick very easily to be honest. At least, I don't show it outwardly. The first meal I made for myself however was actually a bowl of rice with a fried egg and soy sauce in the communal kitchen.

Brie as a character isn't necessarily based off of myself per se, but there are definitely aspects of her character and what she wears that reflect me as a person. I love me some tank tops and shorts!

Layouts in general tend to pose a bit of a challenge for me, personally. By limiting my locations to just two, it helped me understand the layouts better and made going about drawing them a little bit easier. These are a couple of the layouts that I made for A Taste of Home that I ended up really liking. The location of the kitchen in the flashbacks of the film is based on the kitchen of my parents' house, the one I grew up in. It was fun to recreate a place I have many fond memories of, and to place it in my film!

My animation process for A Taste of Home was a bit of an experiment for me. I don't typically draw in a lineless style, let alone animate in one, but I really like the look of it, so I wanted to give it a try.

The entire process was a learning curve and took me a bit longer than I expected it to. I really like the way the look of the film turned out, but I think that I'd like to experiment more with this style in the future, to try and make it a bit more fluid. I also think that this style and film in general could really benefit from some nicer and more in depth compositing, which I'd also love to learn and to play around with.

In all though, I'm proud of what I produced.
